Many areas of design have adapted to neurodevelopmental disorders, but restaurant design lags behind. This exclusionary approach means autistic children and their families miss out on family time due to sensory challenges in restaurants, causing anxiety.
Autism manifests in hypersensitivity (overstimulation) and hyposensitivity (understimulation) to environmental stimuli.
I've chosen Nando's as my restaurant brand, whilst their current branding is not considerate towards sensitive users, their community-oriented approach could foster inclusivity and the potentital for Autism-friendly restaurants in the future.
M Shed offers sensory benefits with abundant natural light and diverse environmental stimuli. It accommodates different preferences.
Nando's Neurospicy design strategy caters to both Hyper and Hypo autistic users, inspired by Autism spectrum diagrams and Nando's brand. The Chili Spectrum guides customers to the right dining zone based on sensory levels.
